Looking Ahead

Toronto Half Marathon

I've signed up for the Toronto Half in May. My running mileage has been increasing so it should be a good race. I ran this same race last year and arrived late because the bus was delayed (the subway doesn't open early enough on Sunday mornings). I ended up running the first 7k of the race awkwardly with my backpack. This year I bought a ticket for the official shuttle bus that goes from downtown Toronto to the start line in North York to prevent that from happening again. As for the Fall, unfortunately I didn’t get into the New York City Marathon this year. I'll likely run something else. Contenders include the Montreal Marathon (Sep 24), Lisbon Marathon (Oct 8), Amsterdam Marathon or Toronto Marathon (Oct 15). I might try and stay in Canada though because I’ll already be travelling abroad this year.

Québec City

During the May long weekend, Renato and I are going to Québec City. We will work remotely for one day and then hang out through the weekend. One thing we have planned is a concert. The last time I was in Québec City was in junior high school for a class trip. It was led organized by my French teacher. I don't remember much in detail but have glimpses of the stone buildings by the Old Port and the St.Lawrence River. It amazed me that the river connected to the Atlantic ocean and brought back even earlier memories of a project I did in grade school on the explorer Samuel de Champlain.

Hong Kong

I’ll be visiting Hong Kong in May. The main purpose is to visit my grandmother and celebrate her birthday. It’ll be a short 2 week trip and I'm excited to visit again. However, I'm not looking forward to the long flight. One thing I always enjoy is arriving at the Hong Kong airport and accessing all the various modes of transport they offer. Last time I took a double decker bus all the way to my aunt's place. This time Renato and I will probably take the airport express. We plan on a day trip to Macau. Maybe I'll be able to read some words in Portuguese.

JavaScript Challenge

All the designers at my work (there are just four of us) expressed an interest in improving our JavaScript skills. Since everyone is at a different level—me being the most beginner—I loosely organized a challenge for us to define our own projects and keep one another accountable throughout the year. I haven’t decided what to do yet but I'll likely experiment with a JavaScript library called p5.js because it’s been a long-standing goal. I've mentioned it several times in previous magazines and never got to it.

Documentation and Organizing Ideas

I'd like to do some project documentation, some digital housekeeping. I like sense-making and organizing information into clear categories of thought. It just takes a lot of time to do that regularly for my own life. I have this idea that I'd create a version of the Mighty Hok Chronicles but featuring more work and professional topics. I'm interested in finding ways to highlight process more than outcome.

Until Next Time
